Just when I think I “understand” my body

I realize that I don’t.  And probably never will.  Yeah sure, I have a pretty good take on how I’m feeling.  If today will be a strong workout or not.  Just like most people who train.

But I am really stumped by how my body reacts to running.  Yesterday I prepped for my run and had some goals in mind.  Not even speed goals.  Just a simple distance goal.  I didn’t care if the time was 12-minute miles.  But I wanted to run my first 5K in many years.

It’s obvious by my tone that my run didn’t go as planned.  I set out at a slow pace and barely managed to run a mile without stopping.  The pace was over 2 minutes per mile slower than my 2012 best 1 mile time.  So running too fast wasn’t the issue.  Shoes weren’t too old or heavy.  Just a nondescript pair of New Balance that are in good shape.  Had my water bottle with me so hydration wasn’t an issue.

I’m not disappointed or aggravated though.  If anything, it just makes the whole process of getting comfortable with running even more interesting.

you might be out of your good performance zone pace wise. think about how much harder it is to walk with someone slower than you are. screws up your stride, lots of stutter steps, etc. my wife and I ahve noticed that backpacking. we can keep about the same pace as long as we don’t try to stay with each other on the uphills and downhills.

I hate running with a bloody raging passion, but there was a time when I did it every other day, and I know that feel, bro.
